When you first bring that cute puppy home and you are trying to learn how to train a puppy one thing which may seems cute at the time is when your puppy starts to bite you. At this young age your puppy is probably just playing around and he is too small to do any real damage. This, however, is something you want to discourage.

As you learn how to train a puppy you will learn that his biting at this young age is usually just your puppy teething. When he starts to bite you substitute your hand for a chew toy or a bone. If your puppy gets wound up from playing and gets a bit rough it is time to calm him down. Although it may seems like fun to roughhouse with your puppy just remember that that puppy could end up being a 100 pounds plus and still want to play rough. He could very well unintentionally do a lot of damage when he continues to play rough.

As you continue to learn more about how to train a puppy you will realize that it is very beneficial for your dog to chew. It is a way to keep his teeth clean and it is a way for him to exercise his jaw. You need to supply him with the proper things to chew on like chew toys and bones. Any time you catch him chewing something that he is not suppose to be chewing redirect him to something appropriate.

Learning how to train a puppy how to chew on appropriate items can sometimes be tricky. If you have an old shoe that you’re going to throw out then do just that throw it out, do not give it to your puppy as a chew toy. Your puppy may love that old shoe to chew on but unfortunately he cannot tell the difference between your old shoe and your new shoe. He will not understand why your upset when he chews up your brand new shoe. Be very careful as to what you give your puppy to chew on.

Also when learning how to train a puppy you may also find out that bones from some foods are not good for your dog to chew on. Small bones like the ones found in a chicken or a turkey could very easily get lodge in your puppy’s throat and do a lot of damage. Bones from steaks and pork chops can also splinter and do a lot of damage. Your best bet is to not give your dog and bones off the table. You could go to the butchers’ and get those big knuckle bones. They would be safe for your puppy to chew. Remember though they will be messy so take note of where you give it to him to chew.
